A great trip can start with a hotel, resort, condo, vacation rental, cabin, beach house, or something completely different. The important part is making sure the place fits the trip before your money leaves.

1. Start With the Trip — Not the Property

Before searching, decide what the trip actually needs.

Who Is Going?

Adults, children, older relatives, friends, pets, or travelers with mobility or accessibility needs can completely change what makes a stay comfortable.

Why Are You Going?

Theme parks, beaches, family visits, business, events, road trips, relaxation, nightlife, and sightseeing have different location needs.

How Long Are You Staying?

A room that works for two nights may become irritating after ten.

How Will You Get Around?

Driving, rideshare, walking, transit, rental cars, and shuttles all affect where it makes sense to stay.

2. Compare the Real Total Cost

The nightly rate is only part of the price.

Check for

• Taxes
• Cleaning fees
• Resort or destination fees
• Parking
• Valet charges
• Pet fees
• Damage deposits or holds
• Booking or service fees
• Required amenity charges
• Internet charges
• Transportation or shuttle costs

A $170 room with $90 in required charges is not a $170 night.

3. Check the Location on a Map

“Near the beach,” “close to downtown,” or “minutes from the attractions” can mean very different things depending on traffic, road layout, and who wrote the description.

• Normal driving time
• Tolls
• Transit access
• Parking
• Grocery stores
• Pharmacies
• Hospitals or urgent care when relevant
• Nearby construction or major road projects

4. Parking Can Change the Deal

Do not settle for a vague “parking available” label. Find out what kind of parking actually exists and what it costs.

• Valet available as an option
• Valet-only parking
• Off-site parking
• Street parking
• No on-site parking

Also check whether the parking charge is per night, per vehicle, per entry, or subject to taxes and fees.

5. Airport Shuttle: Free, Paid, or Not There?

If airport transportation matters, verify it directly instead of assuming a hotel near the airport automatically provides a shuttle.

6. Make Sure Everyone Can Actually Sleep There

“Sleeps eight” does not automatically mean eight people will enjoy sleeping there.

• Number of actual beds
• Bed sizes
• Sofa beds or bunks
• Bedroom privacy
• Number of bathrooms
• Stairs
• Accessibility
• Cribs or child equipment if promised

7. Read the Cancellation and Refund Terms Before Paying

Travel plans can change because of illness, weather, work, transportation, family emergencies, or events outside your control.

Know the cancellation deadline, refund amount, nonrefundable portion, date-change rules, and any travel-credit terms before booking.

8. Verify the Property and Booking Source

Vacation-rental scams can use copied photographs, real property addresses, fake owners, fake booking pages, or properties that are not actually available.

• Search the full property address independently.
• Compare other listings for the same address.
• Verify the property or rental company through an independent source.
• Get a copy of the contract or booking terms before paying when applicable.
• If the rental is inside a resort, verify the location with the resort when appropriate.

9. Watch How Someone Wants You to Pay

A strange payment demand can be a major warning sign.

Be highly suspicious if someone insists that you can only pay through a wire transfer, gift card, cryptocurrency, or another difficult-to-reverse payment method.

10. Ratings Matter — But Recent Reports Matter More

A customer rating can give you a quick signal, but written reviews often reveal whether the property has an active problem.

• Bed bugs, roaches, ants, or other pest complaints
• Dirty rooms, linens, bathrooms, or common areas
• Strong odors or moisture problems
• Poor customer service
• Check-in delays or reservation problems
• Billing disputes or unexpected charges
• Broken air conditioning or heating
• Maintenance problems
• Noise
• Parking problems
• Misleading photographs or descriptions

One negative review is not automatically a pattern. Several recent guests independently reporting the same issue deserves attention.

11. Check the Better Business Bureau When Useful

For hotels, resorts, management companies, travel companies, and other identifiable businesses, you can check whether the business has a BBB profile and, when applicable, whether it is BBB Accredited.

Look at the current rating, complaint history, complaint themes, and how the business responds. BBB information should be treated as one research source rather than a guarantee of quality.

12. Understand Check-In Before Arrival Day

14. Think About Children, Older Travelers & Accessibility

• Accessible entrances or rooms when needed

15. Verify the Amenities You Actually Care About

“Available on property” does not always mean “included, open, and available during your stay.”

16. Look at Food Costs Too

17. Internet May Be Part of the Vacation Plan

Even on vacation, someone may need internet for work, school, gaming, streaming, travel planning, or keeping in contact with family.

If reliable internet is essential, treat it as a requirement rather than a bonus.

19. Save the Reservation Information Offline
