Losing power is inconvenient when it lasts ten minutes. It can become a serious home-life problem when it lasts ten hours or several days. Lights disappear, phones begin dying, internet equipment shuts down, food can become harder to protect, security equipment may be affected, and some households have medical or accessibility needs that make electricity especially important. 1. Plan Before the House Goes Dark
The middle of an outage is a bad time to discover that the flashlight batteries are dead, the power station is empty, the generator has not been started in three years, or nobody remembers where the charging cables are.

- Understand how your security system behaves without utility power
- Plan for medical or accessibility equipment where applicable

2. Watts and Watt-Hours Are Not the Same Thing
This difference is the key to choosing backup power.
Watts (W)
Watts describe how much power something requires at a particular moment. Generator and power-station output ratings are normally expressed in watts.
Watt-Hours (Wh / kWh)
Watt-hours describe energy used over time. A 100-watt device operating for five hours uses approximately 500 watt-hours, or 0.5 kWh.
3. Your Electric Bill Can Give You a Reality Check
Many electric bills show the household's electricity usage in kilowatt-hours (kWh). Look for wording such as “kWh used,” “energy usage,” or a usage section covering the billing period.
That number can tell you how much electricity your household normally uses, but it does not tell you the home's maximum instantaneous power demand.

- Use appliance labels or manufacturer specifications whenever possible.
- Running watts are the normal operating load.
- Starting watts are the temporary startup requirement of some motor-driven equipment.
- Hours per day should represent expected actual operating time during an outage.
Step 1 — What Does Your Electric Bill Say?
Enter the total kWh from a recent electric bill and the number of days in that billing period.
Step 2 — Build Your Emergency Power Plan
Add the equipment you actually want to use during an outage. Do not feel obligated to recreate your normal electricity consumption.
Step 3 — Test a Battery Power Station
Enter the specifications of a battery power station you are considering. Use the current manufacturer's specifications or product listing.
The 85% starting value is only a planning assumption, not a guaranteed specification for any particular product. Conversion losses, temperature, standby consumption, battery condition, and other factors affect real runtime. Change the percentage if the manufacturer provides more appropriate information.
Step 4 — Check a Gasoline or Propane Generator
Generator wattage can tell us whether the unit is large enough to handle your planned load. Fuel runtime requires manufacturer-specific information because different engines, loads, and fuels consume fuel differently.

6. Small Backup Power Still Matters

Fuel-powered generators produce carbon monoxide. Improper use can turn a power outage into a life-threatening emergency.
Current U.S. consumer-safety guidance recommends operating portable generators at least 20 feet away from the home, with exhaust directed away from the home and other buildings. Never run one inside a home, garage, basement, shed, porch, carport, crawlspace, or other enclosed or partially enclosed area.
